It is about a young girl, Rika, whose mother views her as being ugly, and favours her other daughter, Mami. Rika thinks of herself as ugly and as an iguana, but after her mother’s death, realises that her mother was also an ugly iguana.

Iguana Girl reflects Hagio’s own relationship with her mother, and it took her “years to write this story”. Hagio saw an iguana in a documentary on television and identified with it, feeling it was “lamenting its failure to become a human, just like me”.

Il s'agit d'une jeune fille, Rika, dont la mère la considère laide et favorise son autre fille, Mami. Rika se considère laide et
 comme un iguane, mais après la mort de sa mère, elle se rend compte que sa mère était aussi une iguane laide.

Iguana Girl reflète la propre relation de Hagio avec sa mère, et il lui a fallu « des années pour écrire cette histoire ». 
Hagio a vu un iguane dans un documentaire télévisé et s'est identifiée à lui, ayant le sentiment qu'il « déplorait son 
échec à devenir un humain, tout comme moi ».
